AP Reporter in China Restricted Despite Permit

1/25/2008 11:45:00 AM

CHAN:
On Monday two hundred Beijing residents gathered in front of city council. A reporter from the Associated Press showed up and tried to interview the them. But he was stopped by police guarding the facility. Here’s the full story.

STORY:
The residents were protesting forced confiscations of their property by the Chinese Communist Party or CCP.

According to an eyewitness, Associated Press reporter David Hu tried to interview the protesters. Two police then came out from the city council building and tried to confiscate the reporter’s press ID. David Hu presented his interview permit and other documentation from city council.

[Wong Jianping, Victim of House Confiscation]:
“After the police checked the reporter’s ID, they waited for a reply from the police superiors. After that, David didn’t do any interviews, just took some photos and left. The police car chased him... I don’t know what happened after that.”

The CCP publicized that, from the 1st of January 2007 to the 17th of October 2008, international reporters can do interviews in China if they have a permit. But this story obviously suggests otherwise.
